    My dear Francis,

As this is the day of our  county election and kept us as a holiday with many, I purpose devoting a little time to writing a few lines to you.     I suppose your American brothers and sisters are sometimes ready to ask,  "Do our friends now and then send a wish or a thought after me?"    Although I have very little time for writing,  I often find tine for  thinking about you,  and particularly if there should be a little sort of melancholy or sentimental sort of a feeling that sometimes steals over one's senses; when the thoughts recur to the past scenes, past enjoyments, past conversation,   and when I think of a dear departed mother whose careworn brow is forever hid from our gaze.    I scarcely ever think of her, but it is in connection with those of our family who were under great bodily suffering; her holy confidence in God; her exclamation of "All is well" and the gentle,  peaceful security that manifestly pervaded her soul, during her dying day which seemed as calm and unruffled as a summer sea when not a breath of wind flies on its surface,  Her end was truly an illustration of the Psalmist "Mark the perfect man and behold the upright",  for the end of that man is peace".    The sun of her life seemed to set without a cloud.

I do not think that there is time for the whole of this letter in this book and the paper is very poor, so I intend to obtain a new book and copy it in that.

    Aunt Kitty
