    St. Stephens Oct. 19th 1836

    Dear William and Mary Ann
I suppose you will be greatly surprised when you hear that James is gone to be a Carpenter as he always intended to be a Farmer. When we took our Farm last the rent was rose from 40 to 50 pounds per year for about 30 acres of Land. We took it for 7 years certain to give it up at the end of 7 years that is 2 years next (unreadable) or keep it longer. Your Father was saying he should give notice to quite the Farm at the 7 years end. So I thought what would become of James to go in service I could not hear the idea. So I told Richard of it and he thought it would be beter to get a place for him so he have agreed with John Hicks for one year at 20/s per month. His year will be up the 11th of January 1837 I intend if we give up the farm to build a house Richards Land have had a toilsome life. I long to rest from my labor.
I was sorry to hear of the death of Eleanor. I am much obliged to you for the presents you have sent. I gave the ribbon to Mary at St. Austell and she sent another for Mary Ann with a cap. The Maidens have sent a Pelisse for Emeline with a few small books I have sent a half shirt white hankerchif and a pair of stockings for William also a hankerchif for Mary Ann. I hope you will except it with our kind love.
    From Your Affectionate Mother
    Eleanor Yelland
