    MELBOURNE             March 3 1855

    My Dear Wife and Parents
    (be careful you do not lose any of it)
    There is no doubt but what you have thought a great deal about me since my departure from Old England to the Golden Country, the many dangers and difficulties we had to encounter with in so long and tedious passage, but everything went on much better then I expected. I enjoyed good health all the passage except one week I was poorly. There was no sickness on board of any consequence. There was two births and two deaths and the last Sunday we were on the water a man jumped over
