CORNISH GUARDIAN DATED 23 SEP 1910
CORNISH GUARDIAN DATED 23 SEP 1910
DEATHS. YELLAND - At Trelavour, St.Dennis, September 15th Richard Yelland aged 75 years

               DEATH OF MR.RICHARD YELLAND, SENIOR.
It is with regret that we record the death of Mr.Richard Yelland, sen., the oldest
tradesman in St.Dennis, which occured on Thursday in last week, after an illness
extending over a period of about eight days. At the outset grave fears were entertained
regarding his recovery, as for considerably more than a decade the deceased gentleman
had not enjoyed anything approaching robust health, being subject to periodical attacks
of acute forms of illness. He was astute in all matters pertaining to commercial
affairs, full of tact, resourcefulness, and sound judgment. This was evidenced by the
fact that he carried on a successful and extensive business as a butcher for over half
a century, also giving some attention to agriculture. He was a familiar figure at
important cattle markets and exhibitions. Deceased was a great lover of horses, a
fearless and graceful rider, and it was his paramount aim to raise their standard to
the highest possible degree, he being a breeder of thoroughbreds. Mr.Yelland was a good
judge of horse flesh, his services in that respect often proving valuable. In the
rearing of poultry the deceased took more than ordinary interest, keeping fancy birds
of good strain. For about 45 years he was associated with Providence United Methodist
Free Church, St.Dennis (now Providence U.M.C.), being assistant superintendent of the
Sunday School, society steward, and the oldest trustee, filling those offices with
credit and distinction, besides manifesting a warm spirit concerning the prosperity and
welfare of the church generally. Nature endowed him with some characteristic traits. The
most striking were his extreme kindly nature, urbanity, and suavity of manner. Of fine
physique, standing nearly six feet, with a commanding bearing, he retained a remarkable
uprightness despite advancing years. His demise removes a link with the past, forming
as he did a notable local personality, beloved, respected, and esteemed by all classes
and sections. Of deceased it can truthfully be said he was the friend of all and the
enemy of none. Mr.Yelland celebated his golden wedding last Easter, and leaves a widow,
six sons, and three daughters, for whom the deepest sympathy is felt.
               THE FUNERAL
Amid general manifestations of sympathy and respect the funeral took place on Monday
last in the presence of a large concourse of sympathising friends in St.Dennis parish
churchyard. Outside deceased's late residence "Jerusalem, my happy home," was sung. The
first part of the service was held in Providence United Methodist Church, where the
choir and Sunday School children rendered "O rest in the Lord" and "O God, our help in
ages past." Mr.James Liddicoat played the "Dead March." Revs.H.B. Coventry and W.F.
    Charlton, circuit ministers, officiated.
The chief mourners were Mrs.R.Yelland (widow), Mr.Hart Yelland (son), Mr.Rd. Yelland
and Mrs.J. Hooper (son and daughter), Mr.G. Yelland and Mrs.R. Yelland (son and
